Steve joined the two regular hosts for a special show on Tuesday, November 11th. Steve has been living in Korea for the past 3 and a half years, but will be leaving the country soon. His show is full of personal stories and meaningful songs that are related to his love of KPOP and his life in Korea.

The band made its formal debut under rocker Seo Taiji’s label Goesoo Indigene in 2002 and was the second Korean act invited to play at the Summer Sonic Music Festival in Japan. The band has been enjoying success on the charts with its latest album “Separation Anxiety.”

Dee is back with another rock lesson, this time on Wiretap In My Ear, also known as 내 귀에 도청장치/Nae Gwi-eh Docheongjangchi in Korea and Prana abroad. This indie/glam rock band has been making music for 13 years, but entered the mainstream rock scene in 2001, with their self-titled formal album. Dee met the band 3 years ago through a small rock festival. The band’s unique style and free-spirited attitude impressed YB and the two bands remain close as members of the crew of bands called Rock Star. Their latest album “Shaman” is a unique live concert album released in April, 2008.

Korea’s representative alternative rock band Pia is the topic of Dee’s lesson this week. Starting off in Busan in the late 90s, Pia made took its unique sound to Seoul and has been making waves ever since. Their powerful yet emotional music, which incorporates alternative, metal, emo, ballads and even turntable scratching and other FX (Dee likens them to the US band Linkin Park), has gained the band fans at home and abroad. The band released their latest album, “Urban Explorer,” in July.

Its members became friends while still active in other bands in the indie rock world: Lead singer Haerang and bassist Dong-Wook were formerly in Hotdog! and O.H.N. while guitarist Ho-Jin and drummer Chun-Gi last played with the band Loop. The four musicians decided to form Transfixion and released a self-titled album in 2002. Known for their flamboyant style and unique sound, the band has been credited for making rock more mainstream in Korea. Their latest album “Revolution” was released in the summer of 2008 and features up-and-coming singer Xeno.

Dee tells us about the punk rock band Crying Nut this week on Rock On with Yoon Do-Hyun. Crying Nut, one of Korea’s first punk rock bands, made an explosive entrance into mainstream KPOP with its debut album “Horse Racing/ Mal Dallija” in 1998. The album sold over 100,000 copies, a feat even for albums from top stars, let alone a new, indie punk rock band. The band continues to play small venues in Hongdae, as well as local and international festivals and tours.

This week Dee tells us about heavy metal band Shinawi. The band debuted in 1986 with “Turn Up the Radio” and are known for their ever-changing line-up almost as much as their music. Started by talented guitarist Shin Dae-Chul (who happens to be son of the “Godfather of Rock” Shin Joong-Hyun), the band has seen 21 members come and go, including well-known singers Lim Jae-Bum, Seo Taiji, Kim Jong-Seo and Kim Bada. The band is currently made up of guitarist Shin Dae-Chul, vocalist Kang San, drummer Lee Dong-Yup and bassist Lee Kyung-Han.

This week, Dee tells us about the “Godfather of Rock,” Shin Joong-Hyun. Shin is Korea’s first rocker, starting his career playing at US army bases after the Korean War. He formed Korea’s first rock band, Add4, and went on to write hits not only for himself and his bands, but for other singers like the Pearl Sisters and Kim Choo-Ja. After denying a command to write a song for dictator Park Chung-Hee in 1972, Shin was arrested under the pretense of drug use and possession. He was released 4 months later to find that his music had been banned. Though Shin’s career and life have been dramatic at times, his innovation, talent and true rock & roll spirit have earned him the respect of peers and the younger generation. At 70, Shin continues to inspire as Korea’s representative rock star.

For the second edition of Rock on with Yoon Do-Hyun, Dee told us about the legendary band Deulgukhwa (Wild Chrysanthemum). Often compared to the Beatles, the folk rock band managed to influence a generation, and generations thereafter, though they released just 6 albums. The band went their separate ways in 1995 due to musical differences between its members, vocalist Jun In-Kwon, guitarist Choi Sung-Won and drummer Joo Chan-Kwon.
